Show HN: Launch VM workloads securely and instantaneously, without VMs
4 by ashishbijlani | 0 comments on Hacker News.
Hello HN! We've been working on a new hypervisor https://kwarantine.xyz that can run strongly isolated containers. This is still a WIP, but we wanted to give the community an idea about our approach, its benefits, and various use cases it unlocks. Today, VMs are used to host containers, and make up for the lack of strong security as well as kernel isolation in containers. This work adds this missing security piece in containers. We plan on launching a free private beta soon. Meanwhile, we'd deeply appreciate any feedback, and happy to answer any questions here or on our slack channel. Thanks!

Show HN: Just launched my online learning startup (3 years solo indie hacking)
4 by vfc1 | 2 comments on Hacker News.
Hello everyone, I just launched my bootstrapped (no funding) online learning startup, after 3 years of solo development part-time (2 to 3 days a week) - https://ift.tt/3n40XaK I would love for you guys to go through the landing page and give me your feedback on the page itself, the idea, the pricing model, any feedback would be much appreciated. About the product, it's an online course hosting platform. Online instructors upload their video courses, integrate with Stripe, set a price, create a course landing page and website home page (there is a website builder component to it), maybe create some discounts and start selling courses. The main added value is that the user experience is better than usual, here is an example of the course player where students can navigate through the course, search for answers and ask questions - https://ift.tt/3egnMnt Besides that, the price is much lower than usual. Normally, it takes about $100 a month in order to get an equivalent set of features, while in our platform you can start for free in the growth plan (5% fees on any sales made, no recurring charges). Then later you can upgrade to a subscription which costs less than half of what is available elsewhere. The target audience are online instructors, which create video courses on an educational topic, with or without a pre-existing audience. It's tough for instructors just starting out until they can become profitable, so the goal is to give them all the information that they need for free, plus a growth plan to get things started. Let me know what you think of the idea, and if you have any suggestions or noticed something wrong with the business model, the page, etc. In general, I would love to hear your thoughts on this project. Thanks & Regards

Show HN: Side project passed $2.5k/mo revenue after 2 years (Phoenix and Vue)
5 by enraged_camel | 0 comments on Hacker News.
Several years ago, I had a client whose salespeople were using Excel to generate sales proposals. This was inefficient and the resulting documents looked awful, so I developed a new process for them using a no-code platform. It featured a web form that was tied to a workflow engine, and a fancy PDF got emailed to the customer to sign. When the client loved the solution, I knew I was on to something. However, the no-code platform wasn't very customizable, so I decided to rebuild the process as a SaaS product. The client's CTO wanted in and we became cofounders. Today, we passed the $2,500/mo. threshold, and couldn't be more excited! (https://pricetable.io) Things started slow. I wasn't a software developer by trade, so I was constantly "drinking from the fire hose." Also, my cofounder and I had disagreements regarding features, UX, sales strategy... you name it. We never fought, but initially there was a sense of disconnect. Then one day, everything clicked. His company started to pilot our product, and after a few months became our first customer. Receiving feedback from real users was a breath of fresh air. It was also really eye-opening to see which assumptions we had made were slam dunks and which were hilariously wrong! Things might have been easier had I picked a more mainstream stack like Rails/Django, but once I got up to speed with Elixir and Vue, development became a Zen-like experience. Both communities are very welcoming and immensely helpful. HN has also been an extraordinary source of inspiration; reading success stories always makes me launch my code editor! Similarly, hearing from companies that didn't make it helps us keep our expectations realistic. Now we shift focus to finding new clients. We have a very solid success story and metrics to back it up. However, both my partner and I still have day jobs we need the income from, and the product requires a fairly high-touch sales approach. Any advice would be appreciated. :)

Show HN: See the stock trades your representative is making
2 by tcarambat1010 | 0 comments on Hacker News.
Hey HN, I am the creator of senatestockwatcher.com and im finally happy to say that the same data that is filed from the House of Representatives is now live for everyone to watch, report against, and use. https://ift.tt/3dzGztB When Senate Stock Watcher was released, the US was in the midst of an election year and after the COVID market crash the SEC had opened some investigations on 3 Senators for insider trading allegations. My interest in politics and finance lead me to build that website, but the number one question I always got was "where is the houses' data?" The House of Reps exclusively files their transactions reports in PDF forms that vary wildly in quality and format, so OCR was not a trustworthy and tenable solution. There is a supporting platform for the community to contribute to this dataset so that it can eventually be 100% complete. To date, I have transcribed over 690 transactions. There are literally hundreds of thousands more to go. If you would like to help on this front - you can also go to: https://ift.tt/3uiTs1S This data is available, totally open, in both JSON and CSV format so that people more savvy than me can uncover trends and patterns.

Show HN: I wrote an HN bot to suggest HTTPS url when people post HTTP URLs
3 by fishywang | 0 comments on Hacker News.
It's inspired by this comment I made: https://ift.tt/3dxKQhp. I actually saw several comments with HTTP URL posted, and that was the only one I bothered to comment on. So I thought that this is something better suited for bots than human. I hacked this together over yesterday and today: https://ift.tt/39E50Vx. Basically it uses the Firebase API (https://ift.tt/1s98Sn3) to find comments with HTTP URLs in them, try the HTTPS version, compare the contents, post back a comment if the contents are more than 95% similar. The "95% similar" part was actually the first part I wrote in the code. At first I tried a few existing go packages implementing diff/lcs, but most of them was quite slow and does a lot of allocations when I'm comparing two randomly generated 10KiB blobs, so I wrote my own (https://ift.tt/3dBlOh5), which is optimized for space (it does almost no allocations), and it's also faster because allocations are slow. (I know this is an unfair comparison that most of the existing implementations need to give you an output that can be used to reconstruct the two blobs back, so at least some of their allocations are required and unavoidable) I also wrote a bug that it would find the same HTTP url in every run and post the same comment over and over again. My apologize to dang or whoever dealt with it (or maybe the system is good enough that it blocked those repetitive comments automatically). In the end it successfully made 6 comments across ~4 hours (not including the repetitive ones). All of those comments are flagged (likely due to hn policy), https://ift.tt/3cRlkEJ is the only one that's still visible to other users at the time of writing, if you are curious. I just killed it completely from the request of dang. Although it only lived for a few hours, it's still a fun exercise. Maybe I'll convert it into a reddit bot next? Who knows.

Show HN: A decentralised VC firm using Bitclout?
2 by navchatterji | 1 comments on Hacker News.
Experiments are fun. I recently came across Bitclout, and I love the underlying concept. It’s ballsy, will it work? — time will tell. I think Bitclout as a thesis is moving towards the right direction. Decentralised Social Media networks will be the next thing and allowing users to own their own social equity and monetise that is the future. Last year I started an experimental fund, Khoob (www.khoob.group) The idea was to invest in and build interesting Indian companies (a Betaworks / Expa for India). Thus far we have made 4 investments, and are building 4 companies. At Khoob I’m the solo GP, no LPs — so plenty of room to experiment. Currently Bitclout is aiming at helping individuals productise themselves. Individuals are brands, so why not an actual brand? The VC (venture capital) space is also undergoing a metamorphosis (eg. Sahil Lavingia's recent distributed raise for Gumroad). With that said we setup : https://ift.tt/3unrq5C Currently the revenue into Khoob comes in the form of: 1). Dividends from investments / companies we have built. (Revenue Sharing) 2). Carry from liquidation events. (M&A, Secondary Sales). At the end of Q2–2021 we will be using 10% of our proceeds to purchase Khoob coins on Bitclout. Purchasers of our coins will be invited into a mailing list where we will be opening up data regarding current / future investments and companies we are building. This experiment will be about understanding whether we can decentralise Khoob as a fund and bring on (micro)LPs in a radically different way. Would love your thoughts/feedback.

Show HN: Miniflux-CLI – offline-first Miniflux client
5 by xylogen | 1 comments on Hacker News.
Hey Hacker News, miniflux-cli developer here. I use miniflux as primary source of things to read (including hacker news, of course), but in my case I don't have stable internet connection most of the time, so I did offline-first console client for miniflux, check it out: https://ift.tt/3fGN40j It syncs all feeds and entries on start and after that you can read all the content offline (including "mark as read"/"mark as unread"). The project built on go, using bbolt db, tview and official miniflux api client. Some neat features - you can set text and background colors of each ui element and hide/show sidebar, statusbar and hotkeybar. Custom hotkeys will be available later, for now "vim-like" is used.

Show HN: A peptide design tool for cancer vaccine
3 by JPLeRouzic | 0 comments on Hacker News.
Dear HNers, I have coded a tool that hopefully could help oncologists to design a peptide vaccine for personalized medicine. https://ift.tt/3dxXnkF Some peptides are specific to cancers. A peptide vaccine is a way to train our body to eradicate the cells that harbor these peptides on their outer membrane. Peptide vaccines are notoriously ineffective but safe, so they could be a second line of defense against cancer after traditional drugs and therapies. A tumor develops many mutations, over time. So there is no standard medical answer. A peptide vaccine will therefore be composed of a set of peptides, which may vary over time. Because peptide vaccines can be designed very quickly, they can help respond as soon as drug resistance develops. Peptide vaccines could be a way for oncologists to distinguish themselves from their colleagues in practice, and allow them to express their know-how. This service uses its own MHC prediction service in PHP (derived from PSSMHCpan). So it is faster than NetMHCPan, but alas, it is currently hosted on a cheap VPS so it cannot take much load. I wonder if you could suggest some business model for this kind of tool? Thanks!
