Show HN: Cube.js – Build Serverless Analytics
4 by keydunov | 0 comments on Hacker News.
Hi everyone! I want to share with you a serverless analytics framework - Cube.js: https://ift.tt/2ERWiX0 . I’m one of the authors and would love to hear your thoughts and feedback. Cube.js is an analytics layer for applications. It supplies building blocks to add analytics features into your application. It comes with caching, pre-aggregations and all other stuff you need to handle large data sets. We’re launching public beta today, with open-sourced React client and cloud hosted server. We’re planning to open source server as well, so it could be self-hosted as a container or on AWS Lambda/Firebase Cloud Functions. It is visualization agnostic, meaning you can use any visualization library you want. Looking forward to hearing your feedback! :)

Show HN: I just released my first commercial audio plugin
2 by wrl | 0 comments on Hacker News.
Hey all. For the last few years, I have been developing a software synthesizer as a side project. It's taken longer than I both hoped and feared, but earlier this week I finally shipped 1.0. Details about the synth itself are up on my website, https://lhiaudio.com/ . For those who are unfamiliar, in music production, there are host applications (such as Logic Pro, Ableton Live, or REAPER) in which most of the work (such as recording or sequencing MIDI data) is done. These applications generally have some built-in tools for the actual generation and processing of audio data, but there is a massive ecosystem of third-party plug-ins for doing this as well. Cadmium is such a project – it takes MIDI notes in and generates sound. I built Cadmium from the ground up, based on my own framework for plugin API abstraction (for which I only have one backend, but that’s not important right now), my own UI toolkit (rutabaga ( https://ift.tt/2ReFLOd ), a cross-platform OpenGL 3.2 scenegraph), and finally the synthesizer engine and plumbing on top of all of that. The whole thing is written in C, with some Python (using waf as my build system) for compile-time codegen and some GLSL for pieces of the UI. Runs on Mac, Windows, and Linux. Realtime audio programming is a pretty challenging field, all things considered. Since it’s realtime, there’s a lot of mundane bits of programming that are strictly verboten – no allocation, no file I/O, no locking/mutexes – but only in the audio thread. So there’s a lot of ringbuffers, lock-free queues, things of that nature, and then there’s the actual UI programming and math/EE for the DSP on top. If you're a musician or producer yourself, I'd love to hear what you think. If you've always been curious about this kind of development, feel free to voice your curiosities here too! I love talking about this lesser-known corner of the wider software development landscape. -w

2 by jph | 0 comments on Hacker News.
https://ift.tt/2J6M3ML We work on projects where we want to prioritize tasks, issues, incidents, etc. We want to use a shared language that is easy to understand for software developers and also for business executives. The link above is our work in progress, on a simple way to rank tasks using clear language and clear examples. The scores are simple: P0 is emergency, P1 is must have, P2 is should have, etc. We use this for agile development, scrum teams, kanban boards, and XP product management. I'm seeking feedback please for areas to improve, adjust, add, and constructive criticism. I'm especially seeking feedback from high-performing startup. Thank you!

Show HN: How to start a business in France
8 by maelito | 0 comments on Hacker News.
Hacker News loves talking about the state of startups in France [1], and the particularities of our social security system [2]. There is no official answer in English on the Web to the question "how to start a company in France", so we've built a website to guide you through it with as little headache as possible. https://ift.tt/2ErYqVf It's open-source software [3] built inside the French public startup incubator, beta.gouv.fr. For those interested : does it convey most of the information you need ? What's missing ? It's the first iteration, and we're planning many new features. [1]: Startup nation ? https://ift.tt/2NFSigg [2]: The French healtcare and pay as you go pension systems are also regularly discussed e.g. https://ift.tt/2fHzsD3 [3]: Source: https://ift.tt/2RXuPW6

Show HN: Back endLab – code free web app back end builder
2 by chris140957 | 0 comments on Hacker News.
Hi all, I'm currently validating an idea for a new BaaS solution which will allow you to build and host a web app backend without writing a single line of code. The app is called BackendLab and the landing page is here: https://ift.tt/2MNXzC4 The idea is that it allows you to define your database models by specifying what fields to include and BackendLab automatically creates a CRUD API which you can start using straight away. We've just launched the public beta and are looking for early adopters (free of charge, just looking for some feedback on the tool) Looking forward to hearing your feedback! Thanks, Chris

Show HN: Detoxify – Kicking out a bad habit? Track it with this
2 by armatav | 0 comments on Hacker News.
Hey HN, I made Detoxify, right now it's just a simple addiction tracker, but I'd like to build it out to focus primarily on another goal: addiction replacement. I was addicted to video games for basically my whole life, and I found that willpower alone is not enough to fully quit - you need to track it and you need to replace it. So in the future I'd like Detoxify to be able to give you something back in a big way - if you spend 8 hours a day on video games, imagine if you could begin a 'detox' and then have the app issue you replacements for those hours. 8 hours of video games becomes 2 hours of Lego sent to your house, plus 2 hours of books, plus 4 hours of kayaking. If that sounds like something you'd like to support the development cycle of, please pick up a trial. https://ift.tt/2EjxjLM...

Show HN: Our Bikes, SF bike share advocacy group
3 by b_rad | 0 comments on Hacker News.
Hey folks, A friend and I built a bike share advocacy group called "Our Bikes" in SF because the local providers (JUMP and Ford GoBike) were facing resistance expanding ( https://bit.ly/2vQ4MX0 ). Check it out: https://ourbikes.org Source code: https://ift.tt/2CMdpHQ On the tech side, we found change.org and other petition sites to be a headache. In many cases, they won't let you directly have the emails of your supporters. Plus, we wanted to customize everything. So I bought a domain name, built the site, shared on Twitter, and things took off! We got some local press ( https://bit.ly/2PxseRo ) and we ended up with 950+ supporters for our petition. We wanted to keep the momentum going. Since we have each supporter's neighborhood, we've been following up by email whenever there's a bike share station potentially coming to a supporter's area. In terms of action, we wanted supporters to be able to easily email their elected officials, but not spam those elected officials with a ton of repetitive form letters. To solve for this, we came up with various combinations of emails and personalized each with the supporter's name and neighborhood. This keeps the emails to our officials feeling much more organic and response has been positive. So far the JUMP bike cap in San Francisco has gone from 250 to 500 with our support, and several new Ford GoBike stations have been approved! It's led to a ton of interesting ideas and discussions - a highlight being connecting with JUMP's CEO and team. Wanted to share and encourage folks to organize around issues they care about. It doesn't have to be a ton of effort and can be a fun side project. Check out the code, Sketch files, etc and start your own advocacy group today. -Brad

Show HN: Programming Fonts Browser
9 by klageveen | 0 comments on Hacker News.
https://ift.tt/1lipR4G I've spent some time collecting monospace programming fonts, particularly those that are free to use. (Monospace because you can program with any font and you've got to draw the line somewhere). Usually I include some background info and basic stats in a blog post, and add it to a test drive "app". I've gone through some iterations here, and currently the backbone is a JSON data set ( https://ift.tt/2QzllyZ... ). I've been wondering what further to include here, e.g. glyph counts, of the zeroes are slashed or dotted, if there are OpenType alternatives, etc etc. And how to expose all that. It has been linked here before, but never by me and I haven't been able to respond before. Also, it has seen a lot of work since then. So, here I'd like to show HN what I've made and ask you for feedback, questions, suggestions, etc.

Hello Hacker News, My co-founder and I have spent the better part of years developing a completely hackable Home Automation toolset that runs on a Raspberry Pi, or any machine running Linux. With just a Raspberry Pi and a $45 Z-Wave dongle ( https://ift.tt/2PdsMLU... ), you can run a complete home automation system! Our hub will support any Z-Wave or Z-Wave plus device. We are cloud hosted service that doesn't require you to purchase any proprietary hardware. Our hub software runs on NodeJS and is completely open source. We encourage developers to make a publish extensions. We of course have published an app that allows the creation of dashboards for quick actions, reports, detailed logging, automations, and integration with Alexa. We are currently working on integrating with Google Home. We consider our differentiating features our reliability, focus on privacy, and configurability. So we set out to fix it, and wanted to release it not just for our users, but for any devs who want to do this. iOS/Swift: https://ift.tt/2xUvPCi Android/Kotlin: https://ift.tt/2NkuPfH We wanted to take away the boilerplate necessary and leave the UI and other customizations in place. Launch HN: Station (YC W18) – One place for all your web apps
4 by jberthom | 0 comments on Hacker News.
Hi HN, We're Alex and Julien, the founders of Station ( https://getstation.com/ ). Our free desktop app unifies all your work applications in one neat interface. Think of it as an efficient workspace for all your web tools. We've always had a love / hate relationship with our browser: it's been our main work environment for the last 6 years but we keep struggling to stay focused and never found an efficient technique that would fix my natural impulse to open a new tab and get distracted. After trying quite a few methods (Pomodoro, White noise, Do Not Disturb, ...) & tools (Franz, Toby, Rambox, OneTab, etc.), we came to the conclusion that distraction is a core-design issue in modern browsers that can't be solved with cosmetic changes or simple hacks. If you look at the very first Chrome interface (released 10 years ago!) you'll notice that it isn't significantly different from today's v69. What has dramatically changed is the number of working hours you spend in it. That's why we built Station: it's a SaaS focused, distraction-free platform (600+ apps) that's not meant for browsing but solely for working with web apps. This translates in the first features we shipped: a "Quick-Switch" (a la Alfred) that allows you to quickly change page without losing focus, a "Smart Dock" that segments your workspace by automatically linking all pages to an app, a "Focus Mode" that kills all notifications with 1 click and an "Autosleep" (a la The Great Suspender) that intelligently unloads unused apps from your computer's memory. We realize we still have a long way to go to offer the delightful experience we aim for, but we're committed to it. There are quite a few technical challenges, the main one being pushing the Electron framework to its limits: copy/pasting is sometimes erratic, CPU load can spike, embedded Chrome is constantly obsolete, support of extensions is experimental, multi-window is a bit laggy, and I could go on and on :) We won PH's Product of the Year award last year ( https://ift.tt/2fRLJHR ) which led to a huge boost in active users. This comes with increased pressure to ship features and kill bugs: the community-fed roadmap ( https://ift.tt/2AlAz3K ) is completely crammed but our team of 8 is truly grateful for the user feedback we've been getting. It's been really precious, both motivation and product-wise. This is just the beginning. Our vision is to build an entire operating system for SaaS applications. We want to provide a platform so 3rd party developers can build new features on top of existing web apps, offering users a more native and integrated experience across all of their work tools. Ultimately, anyone using web apps at work would find value in using Station. We're really excited to get your insights on what we're building. On average, our users are active 5h per day in the app: we hope you find it nearly as useful! PS. You can download the app here: https://getstation.com . It's available for free on Mac, Windows and Linux.

Hi one and all. I've created an encrypted personal organizer I wish to share with you all. I know.... you are sighing and thinking "Oh! No! not another one". doogiePIM is different in that it's built by the same coder that created one of the very first PIMs that came out around 18+ years ago and creator of TexNotes way back then (it was actually called Scribillo. Wow, I feel old). The original PIM was sold then abandoned by GemX Software and that made me feel really bad. So, I obtained the full code and started to build a far better version of the information manager. One that will (hopefully) stand the test of time. The work is still ongoing, taking out the bugs, improving features and making it available to everyone around the world with localisation of the UI. (Warning: I'm going to invoke Obi Wan Kenobi logic here....) Therefore, it's not another PIM - it's one of the oldest on the Internet... from a certain point of view :P After a couple of years of work, I think it's almost there. I've rewritten a huge chunk of code, implemented a more modern UI and reworked a lot of the database encryption. I can now start implementing some needed new features and quality-of-life implementations that help rather than hinder. Features such as Android connectivity and better importing of Cloud data. I'm pretty sure you guys will give me a guide as to what you need in a solid PIM. I want to invite you all to take a look at my vision of a single focus PIM. Go ahead and try doogiePIM, tear it apart. I'd love to read anything you have to say about it. You can read my latest dev blog here: https://ift.tt/2y8v87E... Download here: https://ift.tt/2xdNaGf Of course, read about the features and usual blurb here: https://ift.tt/2trcYvu Kindest regard to all, Chris

Hi all :) Saturday, I launched my first side project. It's basically a job board for PHP devs. https://php-at.work In the moment, everyone can post a job listing for free. I review it and activate it manually. I would love to hear any kind of feedback :) I posted it already on saturday, but probably it should be better in Show HN section.
