This is an early concept and I'm looking for advice. https://ift.tt/2Qfkgwi After a site launches, revising the design can be a pretty frustrating process. Designers have to learn git and command line. Or developers have to parse font sizes from redlined screenshots. Clients make printouts and draw on them. Etc. Mod&Dot gives a simple place to collaborate on website edits by saving & sharing changes made in DevTools. Anyone can add comments without using DevTools, too. What do you think? Would love some input.

Partially inspired by recent discussions on HN and other places. I've made a single-focus site to introduce your friends/colleagues/neighbours/family to RSS and web feeds. https://ift.tt/2Odqgbo The site is meant to give the elevator pitch for feeds, show a newbie what feeds are and how to use them, set them up with a reader, and give them some nice starter content if they want it. So much tastemaking and newsmaking power is concentrated in the hands of Facebook/Reddit/Twitter, but I'm convinced it's because much of the general populace doesn't know about feeds. Many people just don't know of any other option than the core three social sites for keeping up with what they like! They're forced to endure all the anger and fighting of social media, just to keep up to date. The more people know about feeds, the more they use feeds, the more sites support feeds, and then more people learn about feeds in a virtuous cycle. I hope to create more uptake of feeds amongst the general population, a more decentralised internet, and maybe just make the average user's day a bit nicer. Let me know what you think. Questions, comments, all appreciated. Spreading the word is very appreciated. :)

Sharing an internal tool that accelerated my development work 10-fold, especially with API debugging. Thought fellow developers here might find it useful. As a developer, I often have trouble reproducing errors at the client end. https://intercept.rest lets me debug and monitor API requests and responses. It is similar to the Network tab in Chrome Developer Tools but works for any API: mobile apps, webhooks, frontend etc. After I shared it with a close circle of friends, they found it incredibly useful and even found new use cases, I never imagined. Been a long time lurker here and have found several such tools that made my life easier. So, wanted to share this here and keen to hear if you folks find it useful too. Some of the Use cases (Look forward to other use cases for this tool): - Reproduce error requests at client side, helps to debug faster. – Easily switch between mock, dev, staging and production – You can even record requests and run load tests to see how your server behaves when 100,000 hit it – debug/monitor webhooks. – Share requests with the backend team for debugging. Hey, HN! This post is not about useless meeting tips, nor about some new tool that drains remaining calendar hours. Like most of us, I’m very frustrated by the amount of time wasted by meetings. Why most of us here hate meetings is well described in PG’s essay: https://ift.tt/ebCxrz There is also a great solution that worked for YC: office hours. Ok, but how can this help a regular maker in a regular company? Most makers struggle with the meetings scheduled by their colleagues, so let’s focus just on the company internal meetings. What if every maker will have her/his own office hours few times a week at different times? Yeah, that probably won’t work. Makers & managers often need to meet in 2+ groups... OK, what if all makers within the company will have office hours at the same time? Would be nice, but that won’t scale as it will require too many conference rooms and switching rooms fast enough may not be possible if someone has six 10min meetings with different folks… Oh, wait, but what about video meetings? There is no room limit there and switching rooms takes seconds. Many of us work in distributed companies with a lot of meetings online already. Great, but there is still a problem with agreeing on times and booking small meetings within those hours. Also, what to do if there is urgent discussion and everything is overbooked ahead of time with non-urgent managerial stuff? The aim of the series (as mentioned in the first post) is to inspire more people to start using Qt. My ambition is to answer the following questions "what is the gist of Qt?"; "what is the 20% that you need to know to develop 80% of the application?"; "what are the perhaps unknown unknowns?". It's a simple web page builder which allows you to design and publish your web pages very quickly. The project is still in beta with a lot of stuff to improve but I'd really like to share it and hear what people think about it and maybe also get some constructive feedback.

Hey HN, I am Vincent of Sterblue ( https://ift.tt/2CJxiQA ). We build software for drones to inspect power lines and wind turbines automatically. We are three drone enthusiasts. I met Nicolas in 2006 during our Aerospace Engineering studies at ISAE, in France. Small drones were still in their infancy and we eagerly enrolled in the brand-new student micro-drone club. Nicolas later met Geoffrey when working in India for a large aerospace company, while I was working on my PhD in Computer Science. In 2015, we shared a feeling of disappointment that the vision people had for drones back in 2006 had not fully happened yet. For example, utility companies need to inspect millions of power line pylons. They still mostly perform inspections using helicopters or rope access technicians. They sometimes use drones for short distance inspections, but they could not scale it up to inspect all of their grid. We decided to try to make drone inspections happen in the renewable energy industry. In the beginning, we were super optimistic: we started by designing and patenting actual drone hardware configurations, building and testing drone prototypes. Then we realised that hardware is really hard! and worse, that new drones are not what this industry needs right now. Even with super high-performance drones, you still need a top-gun-level pilot to capture precise photos 8 hours a day from a drone flying high in the wind. And then you need to spend ages trying to find small anomalies on thousands of captured images. So our approach became to automate most of the inspection process, using off-the-shelf DJI drones. We built two core technologies in the last 2 years to try to get there. The first one is a mission planning and execution engine, based on ideas I developed during my PhD. It allows drones to fly on complex 3D trajectories that wrap tightly around structures, flying the drone sometimes less than 3m away from the objects to inspect. Most other drones companies fly high above the objects to inspect, so their apps show trajectories on 2D maps. Our app shows trajectories on 3D views because our trajectories are intricated closely around objects. As an example, Perception has to take into account the fact that wind turbine blades bend under their own weight. The second is a deep learning framework built on top of Tensorflow, PyTorch and Caffe2. It allows to detect 130 classes of defects on images: corrosion, broken equipment, and other safety hazards. The typical use case for drones today is photogrammetry, in order to create 3D models from captured images. This is not super useful for wind turbine and power line inspection, so we focus on our thing: finding defects directly on images, just like human operators do now. For several classes of common defects, our software has 98% recall and 80% precision. We run up to 18 different neural networks on some images in order to find defects on all kinds of equipment. These two technologies are linked to a GraphQL API and cloud platform. Our customers get to visualize inspections results on PDF reports and 3D interfaces online. Our UIs are made using React and React Native. In the last 6 months we had successful pilot projects with utilities in 7 different countries, and some have even started to use our software in production mode now. This is exciting for us. But we still have a lot to learn, and we’d like to hear your feedback and ideas in this space!

The clips can be added to sticky clips, which is like a built in sticky notes with reminders etc. You can enable or disable password mode. When enabled, it masks the copied passwords. Hello HN! Being a software engineer and an SEO guy I wrote a heap of tools and scripts to make my life easier. Now I've decided to share some of them with the community, and made a small site where I will be publishing them. They are all completely free (yes, free forever) and you don't even need to sign up for the site. Just use the thing as you like, no limits. Currently you can access 4 instruments: - Backlink retriever - Thin/weak content analyzer - Traffic trend analysis - Visitor list retriever I am planning on releasing more free tools with time, and trying to stay original by creating something unusual and valuable at the same time.
