Show HN: AdoPilot – Your Facebook ads on autopilot (text post)
3 by ryuta | 0 comments on Hacker News.
Hi everyone, Review here: https://ift.tt/2KfEe7Q Like any other field I believe that the numbers game of Facebook advertising is best left to algorithms. Yet very few people rely on Ad Automation for managing budgets, ROI, ROAS etc. In the dropshipping industry, people often use intuition to judge how much an ad should be scaled to. So, beginners often scale an ad by 10x, and see their CPC skyrocket by 5-10x. Frightened, they cut back their ad spend and conclude that FB ad spend doesn't scale. A systematic way of increasing ad spends by 10-15% per day while weeding out poor geographies and interests can maintain a user's ROI. We are building a platform that will scale your ad budgets daily, maintain a minum bid, and expand to new market where ROI threshold is upheld. A human should do what humans do best - creative work. Launch HN: Caelum Health (YC S17) – Digital Therapeutic for Stomach Problems
1 by laurenkc | 0 comments on Hacker News.
We’re Luke and Lauren, the founders of Caelum Health ( http://caelumhealth.com ). Caelum is a digital therapeutic for Irritable Bowel Syndrome. We optimize your diet and figure out which foods are driving your stomach problems. Lauren is an MD from UPenn who saw how patients with stomach problems (IBS alone affects 15-20% of people) couldn’t get the care they need. The best treatments - diet and lifestyle changes - work in clinical trials, but are extremely hard to execute in the real world without continuous expert guidance. Very few patients have the resources to afford this type of guidance. Our app fixes this by providing 1-on-1 digital coaching (via messaging). We guide patients through the leading IBS diet (the Low-FODMAP Diet) with turn-by-turn directions and daily lessons/exercises. Currently, the diet requires several stages of eliminating food groups and then adding them back in to see whether symptoms change - forcing each patient to “start from scratch” even though many other patients have gone through the same process. We leverage user data to personalize each patient’s program based on their eating habits, past food trials, and demographics (age, gender, ethnicity, etc). We’re launching our consumer-facing product and will be starting our clinical trial soon. We’re a sibling team and have wanted to start a company together since we were kids. When Luke went into tech and then business school, and Lauren into healthcare investing and then medical school, we thought it probably wouldn’t happen. We were obviously wrong. We became pretty obsessed with bringing data to medicine and applying it to the treatments right in front of us: food, exercise, sleep, stress-reduction.

2 by eigenloss | 0 comments on Hacker News.
I built this app over a week as a way to learn how to use TensorFlow with Mobilenets and to get some experience with Google Play (and partly as a dare). It's written in Java, as I wasn't able to find a Kotlin API for TFLite. It was built with Bazel. I'm pretty satisfied with the actual detector's performance, although I expect I could improve the UI a little bit. It's a weird UX, as you want it to be as simple and fast as possible (loss/notloss) but you also want it to have some sort of recognizability. I would love to hear your thoughts. https://ift.tt/2JjPoHq...

Launch HN: SharpestMinds (YC W18) – Online Community for AI Devs
2 by edouard-harris | 0 comments on Hacker News.
Hi HN! We're Ed and Jeremie, the founders of SharpestMinds in YC's W18 batch. We're building a free online community for ML/AI developers through which they can access job opportunities. (You can apply to join it at https://ift.tt/2vtagtF ) We're ML developers from non traditional backgrounds. Ed did a PhD in biological physics, and Jeremie studied quantum optics before dropping out of grad school to work on SharpestMinds. We started looking for ML jobs after school, thinking it shouldn't be too hard to get one. We found to our naive surprise that we fell short on a number of skills that are needed to do good work in industry. You just don't learn much devops in grad school. As a result we decided to build something that would make it easier for ML devs to develop (and discover!) skills they might be missing, and then get their first jobs or internships. From the outset we also wanted to build a community around the process, since looking for your first job is usually a pretty lonely experience. Because we monetize directly through hiring, we can afford to create a space for discussion without ads or algorithmic distractions :) Our typical users so far have been grad students who know ML material well, but don't yet have much, or any, practical experience. However, you don't need a degree at all (a few of our users are self-taught high school dropouts), and anyone who knows the material is welcome. In fact, that's one of the advantages of our system: we test directly for knowledge, so it doesn't matter how you got that knowledge or how long it took you to get it. One of our goals is that by the time we present you as a candidate, things that would otherwise be holes in your resumé don't matter so much, and we can make that case to companies that are hiring. To qualify for joining, you do an online deep learning quiz (here: https://ift.tt/2HMLy9Y ), followed by a technical interview. If you pass both, we invite you aboard. It's possible to retake the quiz a month later if you don't pass it, and we'll send you tips on what to study in the meantime. Once you join you get access to a job board with exclusive (i.e., not scraped) internship and full-time opportunities on it. We've created an application system where your profile gets customized to the job you're applying for, to maximize the odds that you'll get an interview. We also have lists of common interview questions, mentors that you can practice interviewing with, and periodic AMAs with ML hiring managers from companies like Skydio and Airbnb. The hardest part about building this has been figuring out the best way to present our users to employers. Early on we found that hiring managers were passing on qualified people, because their eyes would glaze over from reading too many CVs. We ended up building application profiles that let our users display their most relevant personal projects prominently in their application. The interview rate has increased significantly as a result. If our approach works for the ML/AI field, we'd like to build communities like this for other fields too. We're looking forward to getting feedback and hearing ideas from HN! We know there are lots of ML devs / enthusiasts on here, and we'd also be very interested in hearing about your own experiences making the transition, or similar programs you might know about. We'd also be interested in hearing about what, in your experience, are the most important programming skills needed by someone with a good knowledge base but little practical experience to be a strong contributor at their first job or internship.

Show HN: A new blockchain that can do email on-chain
2 by trevelyan | 1 comments on Hacker News.
Dear HN, As a long-standing member of this community (2007!), I'm really pleased to announce the launch of the Saito project here. http://saito.tech Since you probably haven't heard of us, Saito is a terabyte-level blockchain designed to support email, social networks, payment channels, distributed forums, and other big-data applications directly on-chain. We achieve scale for this by solving the fundamental economic problems with the proof-of-work and proof-of-stake consensus mechanisms. If you look into the network design, we think we'll blow your mind! Anyway, we've been reading the discussions here for the past several months about whether blockchains are useful and... well... hopefully Saito is going to end that debate! So if you're interested in blockchain technology or just open-minded, I really hope you'll check us out and let me know if you have any feedback or suggestions or questions. Right now we have an online demo, downloadable code on Github, and some resources explaining how Saito works and how to get started building apps with it. Also, I should probably also mention that we're hiring, with the caveat that we're in Asia so anyone interested in joining the team should either be in this part of the world already or happy to work remotely.

Show HN: I'm bringing Mail Pilot back.
4 by alexobenauer | 0 comments on Hacker News.
Hey HN, When I was studying CS in college, I designed a new kind of email client. I was obsessed with the ideas, so I put them into a Kickstarter campaign to see if anyone else wanted them to be a reality too. Luckily, you all came out in full force. Thanks to the HN community from the first day of our campaign, we exceeded our goal by quite a bit. Now, more than 6 years later, after a number of really cool milestones like topping the App Store charts, and most recently a 2+ year hiatus, I’m bringing Mail Pilot back. Why now? You can read it in this 5 minute article that I just published for you to see. In short: the fans resurrected it. Story in full here: https://ift.tt/2vmj1po... Today, I’m unveiling Mail Pilot’s 2018 reimagination of email, which you’ll primarily see on the Focus page of the site: https://ift.tt/2HzMNvw And to all of Mail Pilot’s fans here on HN: you are awesome, and thank you. Thanks for picking Mail Pilot up, dusting it off, and pushing it forward. I hope I’ll make you proud when you get your hands on Mail Pilot 3, when you check out Mail Pilot Discovery Edition, and I look forward to your thoughts in the Yacht Club Slack channel. I'm happy to answer any questions you might have.

Show HN: PDF Assembler – client-side PDF editing
2 by dschnelldavis | 0 comments on Hacker News.
Here's a neat hack I made recently to do basic PDF editing directly in a browser—without having to upload anything to a server. I was initially looking for a way to do simple PDF modification (extracting pages, merging, and adding page numbers). There are some good server-side tools for this (QPDF, PDFTk, PDFBox, iText, Hummus), but for better speed and privacy I really wanted a 100% client-side solution. There are a few good JavaScript PDF libraries for reading and displaying PDFs (pdf.js) and creating PDFs from scratch (jsPDF, PDFKit), but I couldn't find any for editing existing PDFs. So, I did what any self-respecting hacker would do, and rolled my own. :-) Actually, I found out that Mozilla's pdf.js solved half the problem, as it does an excellent job disassembling PDF files. So all I had to do was figure out a way to put them back together again. The result is PDF Assembler, now available on GitHub and NPM. I also put together a demonstration site ( https://ift.tt/2vi9f7s ) which shows some examples of what it can do. I know PDF Assembler still needs some tweaking, but I think the basic idea is sound, and so far I've been pretty happy with how it works. Please take a look and let me know what you think. Thanks! Hey, Hackernews! We are working on a technology to help you focus. Endel generates personalized sound environments to help you focus faster, stay in the zone for longer periods of time and relax better. It's an evolved procedural version of everyone's favorite Music for Programming podcast. We are currently going through Techstars Music program in LA and we need your help. We have created a web prototype of Endel that works in the browser. Can you please test it during one of your deep work sessions and provide feedback? There's also an iOS version available by request. Please visit https://work.endel.io and see if it's working for you!
